How do I maintain the site year after year?
In terms of maintenance, the site is yours and lives in your Squarespace account. You’ll have a monthly or yearly website hosting fee paid to Squarespace. Other than that, you’ll have to do very little other than update information as needed (e.g., add a fax number, change an address, etc.). We do recommend checking your site once every few months to make sure nothing accidentally moved out of place (this can happen from time to time when Squarespace makes an update).

How do I add a border and/or accents to my photo?
This is covered in Module 4: Images Best Practices + Canva Graphics. There's a pdf with template links.
You will create the graphic in Canva with your photo, any accents you would like, and then upload it to your site. This is different than in other places on the site where you directly upload the image. -

What is the difference between a domain and website hosting?
A domain can be hosted anywhere and connected to a website hosted anywhere. With our templates, the website host is Squarespace (again your domain can be hosted elsewhere and connected to your Squarespace site). You get a free 6-month trial — that means you have 6 months to customize your site — but you do need to upgrade to a paid plan to connect your domain. When you go to upgrade, you’ll be able to get 20% off your first year of hosting. Hosting is around $250/year. This is an average cost for premium hosts like Squarespace where they maintain your website’s code and security (with WordPress, you can host with any number of companies, but they don’t maintain your code and site security which is why sometimes it’s cheaper (but definitely not better).

I received an email that my free trial on Squarespace is ending. What does this mean?
You must have an active free trial (or a paid plan) with Squarespace to keep your site. If your free trial expires before you have upgraded to a paid plan, your site will be deleted.
You can request a one-time, seven-day extension to your website trial (click here). After that, you will need to upgrade to a paid plan to keep your site and avoid having it deleted.
If your content hasn't been permanently deleted, we may be able to restore it for you, depending on how long it's been. When your trial site expires, your site content is no longer visible to visitors. Sites that were never a paid subscription are automatically marked for deletion after a period of inactivity.

Why can't I find my website when I search google?
When a new site launches, it can take up to a few weeks to be searchable by just the name and then another 3-9 months for it to climb the Google ranks.
EVEN IF YOU HAVE INDEXED YOUR SITE WITH GOOGLE, IT TAKES TIME FOR GOOGLE TO CRAWL YOUR SITE, IDENTIFY YOUR SITE BY NAME, AND RECOGNIZE THAT YOUR SITE SHOULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH SPECIFIC SEARCH TERMS.
Be sure you have a Google My Business listing so that you show up in local search results (where you rank in these results is also going to take time). You can grab our guide to setting up your Google My Business and our freebie to help get Google reviews in our freebie library.
If you want to invest in your SEO, I highly recommend blogging (grab our blogging mini-course here). To hire an SEO company, it will cost thousands of dollars, and since they don’t understand our industry, you may end up rewriting content that doesn’t make sense or sounds terrible.
SEO is a pretty complex topic. In summary, Google ranks sites in the search engine based on an algorithm that considers these many factors. We highly recommend investing in building relationships with referral sources rather than relying on people to find you on Google. In our experience, when you get into the driver's seat of your marketing, your business grows faster, and you attract more ideal clients.

What do I do if my temporary Squarespace/built-in domain still displays in Google searches after adding a custom domain?
If your built-in domain appears in search results, even after adding a custom domain, it’s likely that your site was indexed before you made the change. You can resolve this by using Google Search Console to request a re-index.
>>Request (re)indexing (follow the steps in Module 6, Lesson 3)
>>You can request that an inspected URL be indexed by Google. Indexing can take up to a week or two; you can check the progress using this tool.
Some caveats when requesting indexing:
>>Indexing typically takes only a day or so— but can take much longer in some cases.
>>Submitting a request does not guarantee that the page will appear in the Google Index.
>>There is a daily limit to how many index requests you can submit. If you want many pages indexed, try submitting a sitemap to Google.
To request indexing for a URL:
Click Request Indexing on the inspection result page for the URL. If the page passes a quick check to test for immediate indexing errors, it will be submitted to the indexing queue. You cannot request indexing if the page is considered to be non-indexable in the live test.
